The Aging Spine - Symptoms
Degeneration of the lumbar spine from normal aging may present symptoms caused by a narrowing of the spinal canal and/or excessive loading on the spinal segment.
If you suffer from pain generated by degeneration of the lumbar spine, the intervertebral discs or facet joints you may experience various symptoms, including:
• Dull or aching back pain that may spread to your legs
• Numbness and “pins and needles” in your legs, calves or buttocks
• Weakness, or a loss of balance, and
• A decreased endurance for physical activities
Symptoms often increase after walking a predictable distance or standing for a time. Symptoms mostly decrease when you:
• Sit
• Bend forward
• Lie down, or
• Put your foot on a raised rest
